Telstra Health’s first Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Activity on MedicalDirector Clinical now available for GPs
30 April, 2025
Telstra Health is delighted to announce the first of its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities for general practitioners (GPs), available at no additional cost through its MedicalDirector Clinical software.
Approved by the RACGP, Telstra Health’s first CPD activity, focused on managing patients with type 2 diabetes and coexisting conditions, allows GPs to earn 11 of the annual 50 CPD hours they are required to complete.
Nearly 1.2 million, or 1 in 20, Australians are living with type 2 diabetes, and 125 new cases are diagnosed daily, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
Designed to reduce administrative workload, Telstra Health’s CPD activity makes it easier than ever for GPs to earn their annual professional development hours across Measuring Outcomes and Educational Activities components.
In addition to supporting goal setting and reflection, MedicalDirector will flag opportunities to apply learning during day-to-day patient care and identify patients for whom the learnings from the CPD activity is potentially relevant. At the end of the activity, Telstra Health helps GPs lodge their CPD hours via MedicalDirector Clinical. This intuitive and integrated approach helps GPs focus on what matters most: delivering quality patient care while also meeting professional development requirements.
“In its first year since the new CPD requirements, there have been adoption challenges amongst GPs. As a provider of EHR software, Telstra Health is uniquely positioned to assist GPs with meeting their CPD requirements,” said Dr. Janice Tan, Clinical Director at Telstra Health. “With the new tools available in MedicalDirector, we have made it easier for GPs to earn hours while maintaining the regulatory integrity of their CPD-hour collection. Its integration into daily patient care makes it convenient and effective.”
According to the Australian Medical Association (AMA), GPs spend an average of 9 hours a week on non-clinical tasks, impacting the time available to provide quality patient care. Telstra Health’s CPD activities are easily accessible within MedicalDirector, transforming routine practice into CPD learning opportunities.
“The launch of this CPD activity is a positive step forward. The Royal Australian College of GPs is committed to the best possible continuing professional development for our members so that they can continuously improve their skills and knowledge base,” said Dr Michael Wright, President of the RACGP. “With Telstra Health’s activity, GPs across Australia can receive helpful prompts highlighting CPD learning opportunities. This approach helps GPs focus on doing what they do best – providing the highest possible standard of patient care to people in communities nation-wide.”
The registration deadline for this first CPD activity is 31 May 2025.
How GPs experience Telstra Health’s CPD activity as part of day-to-day workflow:
- Clinical messages: GPs working in MedicalDirector Clinical will receive messages for eligible patients. The messages provide relevant information, and a call-to-action related to the CPD topic, contributing to CPD hours and keeping CPD learnings front of mind during patient consultations.
- Practice management: A dashboard helps to identify patients potentially eligible for review, recall or follow-up consultations; it tracks patient care patterns, contributing to CPD hours.
- Learning opportunities: GPs can access the relevant on-demand webinar, making it easy to participate in CPD directly through their clinical software.
- Tracking and reporting: For GPs who choose to participate, MedicalDirector Clinical automatically tracks CPD hours. At the end of the activity, GPs receive a comprehensive report and complete a reflection form. Telstra Health then submits the hours to RACGP, updating the ‘myCPD home’ account automatically, ensuring regulatory compliance with minimal administrative effort.
